The vision is to highlight the high prevalence of people in the criminal justice system presenting with a neurodivergent need, many of which are undiagnosed or unsupported, and often turn to illicit substances to manage untreated symptoms or emotional distress, contributing to repeat offending and poor engagement with services.
We have a number of speakers including Dr Luke Vinter BA (Hons)MSc PhD CPsychol FHEA, Senior Lecturer in Applied Criminology, speaking about the prevalence of neurodiversity within the criminal justice system, overrepresentation, experiences and more. Dr David Junior Gilbert, CPsychol, AFHEA, University of Salford, Manchester, speaking about FASD, misdiagnosis and the Criminal Justice System.
The event will:
- Highlight the significant number of individuals within the criminal justice system presenting with neurodiverse needs – many of which remain undiagnosed, misunderstood, or unsupported.
- Examine the impact of untreated symptoms, which often lead to emotional distress contributing to repeat offending and poor engagement with services.
- Take on a mini conference style, with speakers and stalls offering insights, interactive discussion and information.
The event is aimed at professionals working within a variety of sectors, including, Probation, Prisons, Approved Premises, Public Health, drug treatment services, housing, healthcare and allied services.
By attending, you will gain a deeper understanding of neurodiversity in the criminal justice system, as well as opportunities to share knowledge and forge links, developing stronger working relationships.
There is second tier to the event planning to take the learnings and newly developed partners into the HMPPS settings for ‘pop up’ neurodiversity sessions.
