Manchester is introducing a neuroprofiling tool to help support children and young people - and we would love to hear your thoughts!
A neuroprofiling tool is a way of thinking about children's and young people's needs, strengths and preferences across areas such as communication, impulse control, sensory experiences, etc.
Back in 2023, we together with Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) worked with parents, carers and some local professionals to co-produce how neuroprofiling might look like here in Manchester. The tool has since been piloted in Manchester and Salford, and has now been adopted across Greater Manchester. The MFT is also looking to develop a website to support the use of the tool in Manchester.
This session aims to feed back to parents and carers the advances that has been made with regards to the tool and to discuss how we could use it across Education, Health and Social Care in the city of Manchester.
The tool would not replace a referral to SCP and families that complete a neuroprofile can still request an assessment. However, it would give every child a plan as to how reasonable adjustments can be made; a chance to prioritise what would make the biggest difference in terms of quality of life; and a structure for thinking about difference and neurodivergence, and what it means.
Currently, there are nearly 2000 children awaiting assessment for neurodivergence in the city, some of whom may wait 2 years or more before they are likely to be seen and all of whom will have needs that require support in this time. A neuroprofiling tool might be one way to help meet this need.
