NIGHT CRUISING follows the congenitally blind musician Hideyuki Kato as he pursues the realisation of a short sci-fi film.

But a filmmaker who is totally blind in both eyes - and has been since birth? There is little precedent to be found there. This does not deter Kato Hideyuki, blind from birth, as he seeks to direct his first film. And rather than morph the form into something ‘blind-friendly’ - a reliance on voiceover or narration - Kato instead decides he wants his film to be primarily visual, despite the fact he will never be able to see it.This creates a variety of challenges, as you might imagine. But in encountering them, Kato forces his collaborators to reappraise their artform. Every visual element of filmmaking he questions fundamentally. What is, for example, the purpose of colour, what does it represent? On the flipside, Kato’s own vision of the world is then translated into a form that the sighted can experience - an altruistic transmission of one form of sense experience to another.
