No Spray Streets - biodiversity theme

The Kings ArmsArundel, England
Overview

To reduce pesticide use in Arundel, locals residents have taken over weeding three streets from WSCC. Hear how it's going and maybe join in!

One of Greening Arundel's objectives is to reduce environmental harm. In order to achieve this, we are working on the reduction of harmful pesticide use in the three local allotments and on three of our streets. This is consistent with Arundel Town Councils’ Strategic Plan, which seeks to move to an increasingly nature-friendly environment.

Part of the move away from the use of harmful pesticides and herbicides has been to work in partnership with West Sussex District Council on a "no spray approach" that cherishes our safe, beautiful streets; values the diversity of plant life and contributes to a biodiversity corridor. Following a training session delivered by WSCC, an agreement was reached to allow local residents to take care of weeding on their streets - Kirdford Road, Bakers Arms Hill and Kings Arms Hill.

This session will describe the pilot project that has been running for the last couple of years. Community Weeders will be on hand to discuss how it has all been going. A representative from WSCC will explain what is required if others want to follow suit. The session will include a walking tour of Kings Arms Hill and Bakers Arms Hill.

This small but incredibly important scheme has the potential to make such a difference to our whole community of vibrant life. Please come along and find out more and maybe get involved in the next stage of this project.
