Olaudah Equiano: Meeting the ‘Authorial Character’ by Abi Teeder

The 1789 autobiography of Olaudah Equiano (Gustavus Vassa) offers modern readers a rare insight into enslavement, social justice and self-understanding from the perspective of “Britain’s first Black celebrity”, abolitionist and adventurer, Olaudah Equiano. This talk will explore Equiano’s words through the lens of the ‘implied author’ approach of literature analysis, encouraging readers to build their own relationship with Equiano’s ‘authorial character’.
