On Data in Motion: A Conversation

In 2020, Arts and Culture at Queen Mary University of London invited UK-based artists to converse with academics from across the university. A dentist spoke to a sculptor. A mathematician to a choreographer. A dramatist to an opera singer.While an unforeseen pandemic limited human contact for many of us, these artists and academics found ways to talk. They held conversations about climate change, mental health, housework, racism, childcare, justice, wellbeing. They exchanged knowledge. Expertise. Then the artists set to work. The results are original artworks and creative responses that could not have happened without conversations between academics and artists. They remind us of the power of art and the impact of connecting deep thinkers across fields.The richness of these exchanges provides the inspiration for Queen Mary Conversations Week, which will run from 9 to 16 April 2021. Curated by the Arts and Culture team at QMUL, the events will cover a diverse range of topics from the histories of boxing, to the art of teeth, the future of mobility and the performance of zombies. On Data in Motion: A Conversation is part of Queen Mary Conversations Week, 9-16 April 2021

How does data move, and how does motion create data? What counts as predictable or unpredictable motion, and how does it move us emotionally?  These are questions that dancers, sports scientists, mathematicians, data scientists and choreographers all grapple with. This conversation will explore the overlaps between the work of data scientists and mathematicians in using data to predict motion, and the ways in which dancers and sports scientists map movement.  Starting with the commissioned conversation between the choreographer <a href="https://www.alexanderwhitley.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Alexander Whitley</a> and QMUL Professor of Mathematics <a href="https://www.qmul.ac.uk/maths/profiles/prellbergt.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Thomas Prellberg</a>, the panel will also include Professor <a href="https://www.qmul.ac.uk/whri/people/academic-staff/items/morrisseydylan.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dylan Morrissey</a>, Consultant Physiotherapist and Professor of Sports and Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy at Bart's and the London NHS Trust in conversation with <a href="https://www.thestage.co.uk/news/english-national-ballet-appoints-first-medical-director-to-oversee-dancers-health" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Andy Reynolds</a>, Medical Director at the English National Ballet, Professor of Computer Vision and Human Sensing <a href="http://eecs.qmul.ac.uk/profiles/patrasioannis.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Ioannis Patras</a> of the QMUL School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, and <a href="https://www.qmul.ac.uk/sbcs/staff/elisabettaversace.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dr Elisabetta Versace</a> (QMUL School of Biological and Chemical Sciences), who will explore how digital technologies can support dancers’ learning, including the potential for Artificial Intelligence to help dancers gain additional skills from home during the pandemic.
