Sue and Julia have much in common and their conceptual approach and empathy for used materials gathered and repurposed anew, is just one strong connection.

Narratives around memory, identity and female (hi)stories are also mutually significant themes in their practice.

The recording will be available for at least one month after registration. It cannot be downloaded.

SUE GREEN

Sue Green is a UK textile artist with 30 years experience teaching Art/Textiles, mainly post 16. Additionally, she has maintained her own practice and recently started an MA at

Arts University Plymouth, part time. Sue loves learning and never tires of discovering new directions and processes to push her work and inspire her teaching.

Sue’s practice embraces materiality and explores sculptural approaches to Textiles. Currently investigating the resonance of emotional and physical weight, through history, heritage and the ubiquitous nature of our daily connection to cloth. Her work uses donated and discarded, utilitarian cloth and currently, she is predominantly repurposing cotton bedsheets. Materials come to her (never buying new) and their narratives and imbued memories, inspire her process. Sue has a strong family connection to the Northern rag trade and is interested to discover personal methodologies to celebrate the working people (women and children particularly) of the Textile industry.

JULIA TRISTON

Julia Triston is a British textile artist and educator now living in Denmark. She has stitched from a really young age, and has always had a passion for collecting and making. Julia has worked in the creative industries for more than thirty years teaching, lecturing, writing, exhibiting and selling her textile artwork internationally.

Julia has a deep-rooted passion for exploring making processes, contemporary textile art practice and issues that particularly affect women in society. Her current work is predominantly text based and explores issues around identity, gender and sustainability. She is intrigued by the memories in cloth and the journey textiles take; the majority of her raw materials are previously used or worn, such as discarded embroideries, old clothes, reclaimed household linen or previously worn underwear.

Julia has an MA in Contemporary Applied Arts and has researched and co-authored two popular Batsford titles on textile art (How to be Creative in Textile Art and Contemporary Appliqué). Her work has been featured in many international publications and recorded by international and independent filmmakers. Julia has been an active member of the Textile Study Group since 2014, and is co-director of STITCHBUSINESS.
