Overview

We are offering a FREE hedge-laying course for those working in farming. Others are welcome for only £50 per head.

This is a FREE COURSE FOR ANYONE WORKING IN FARMING - book a farming place.Others welcome, cost £50 - book a general admission place. A well laid hedge keeps livestock sheltered and safe, and helps wildlife too.

Are your hedges full of gaps like our 'before' photo? Do you wish they looked like the 'after' photo? Come and have a fun day with Protect Earth and learn how to fix them properly.

Protect Earth is a registered charity, helping farmers and landowners increase tree cover and biodiversity on their land. We plant trees on unused and degraded farmland, use trees to provide shade and shelter for crops and livestock, create wildflower meadows, and help with tree maintenance for saplings that are struggling. We also remove intensive species and run courses like this one.

What is happening?

We want to support farmers so we are running a FREE one-day hedge-laying and coppicing course for farmers and those working in farming. Gardeners, hobbyists, and anyone else interested are also welcome at the cost of £50 for the day. Learn how to restore your hedgerow in a sustainable way from an experienced trainer, and have fun at the same time. We’ll lay the hedge “Conservation Style” which doesn’t use stakes or binders and also makes use of the brash to minimise waste. You will be shown how to make stakes in case you need them in high wind areas.

There are so many advantages in a properly laid hedge.

· It provides protection from the elements for livestock which keeps them happy.

· Reduce the need for fences to fill in the gaps so it saves money and keeps livestock safe.

· It’s environmentally friendly as it provides food and shelter for wildlife and a safe corridor for them to move around the countryside.

· It looks so much better than a hastily flailed hedge which damages plants.

Reviews of previous courses

Anon - Lovely friendly people, amazing location and John was a brilliant teacher - really supportive and keen to share his knowledge. The information shared was superb and I really appreciated the detailed location and facilities info.

Would you recommend this course to others? Yes, absolutely

Mark - Achieved a lot of practical hedge-laying and gained some valuable experience. Would like to do another next year as a refresher. Yes, I would recommend this to others.

Andrew - Instruction was sound and demystified the subject for me. Hosts couldn't have been more welcoming....plenty of tea! I was full of it when I got home which is a good sign. Thankyou. I've already recommended you to a friend.

What do I need to bring/ know?

No previous experience is necessary. We will provide all the necessary equipment although you are welcome to bring your own tools if you prefer . Please come dressed for the weather.

We'll give you tea, coffee, and biscuits to keep you going, but please bring your own lunch and snacks, and a refillable water bottle as there will be water available to top up.

Will there be parking?

  • There is limited on-site parking

Whenever possible we encourage people to car share, use public transportation, or even cycle, to keep emissions down and avoid stressing parking space.

What happens if we need to cancel?

Bad weather is difficult to plan for. In general, we will continue to plant if it’s raining, but if a severe storm is forecast, we will have to postpone an event for your safety. We will try and notify you as soon as we possibly can, and you’ll be invited to the rescheduled event.
