    Module leaders and Organisers: Dr Kathryn Dalrymple and Dr Florence Tydeman, King's College London

    Summary: The course will cover an introduction to statistics and health research. It will provide an overview of collecting, cleaning, and wrangling data. Students will work primarily in R Studio and will become familiar with reading in, presenting and summarising data. Understand the importance of sample variation and hypothesis testing as well as regression and correlation.


    Syllabus:

    • Introduction to Biostatistics and Research Methods
    • Data management, distribution and visualization
    • T -tests and non-parametric alternative tests (Wilcoxon signed rank test, Mann-Whitney U test)
    • Analysis of contingency tables — chi squared test
    • Hypothesis testing, confidence intervals and p-value
    • Introduction to correlation and regression


    Learning outcomes:

    • Develop an understanding of statistics applied to health research.
    • Understand key components of data types, how to collect and wrangle data into a workable format.
    • Become familiar with the R coding environment, reading in data, summarising findings and presenting data in tables and graphs.
    • The course will also cover the importance of sample variation and hypothesis testing, followed by an introduction to correlation and regression.
    • By the end of the 2-day course participants will have a good understanding of how these topics relate to their own research.


    Additional Information:

    • No prior knowledge of statistics or using R is required to attend this course.
    • This short course will be recorded, and participants will be able to view the recording for approximately 6 weeks after the event.
    • Certificates of attendance will be available for those who attend at least 75% of the course.
    • Participants are strongly encouraged to have their video on for the duration of the course.

    The early bird registration is only available to DOHaD Society members. Purchases will be canceled if the registrant is not a Society member. All non-members may register for the short course at full price (£200 for Regular attendees, £107.50 for Trainees and Emerging Career Researchers, and £10 for individuals in LMICs).


    There are ten scholarships available for DOHaD Society members (Standard or Trainee/ECR) who are *living and working* in lower-, lower middle- and upper middle-income countries, as defined by the OECD and World Bank. If you are originally from an LMIC but are living and working in a high income country, we apologise, you are not eligible for this scholarship.


    The deadline to apply for a scholarship is Friday 21 June 2024. Please complete this form in order to be considered. After this date the £5 LMIC rate will apply. Successful applicants will be notified if they have a place secured.


    Following registration, all LMIC registrants will be asked to fill out a brief questionnaire confirming your location and institution. All Trainee/ECR registrants will need to confirm their career status.
