ONS Local Workshop: Exploring Local Economic Performance
Overview
ONS Local has been established by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) to promote evidence-based decision-making at the local level. We aim to host insightful workshops which will provide practical, technical support to help users make the most of ONS and cross government data. The What Works Centre for Local Economic Growth (What Works Growth) helps make local growth policy more cost-effective, through better use of evaluation and evidence. It was founded in 2013 and is co-run by the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and Centre for Cities. It is part of the Cabinet Office-supported What Works Network of research centres that support government and public sector organisations to create, share, and use high-quality evidence in decision-making. This workshop will be delivered by Victoria Sutherland, Deputy Director, Evidence and Megan Streb, Deputy Director, Outreach.
Exploring local economic performance
In this workshop, What Works Centre for Local Economic Growth (What Works Growth) will discuss how to understand the performance of a local economy using available data and provide some insights from recent data. They will lead a session focused on practical techniques to explore local data and think through policy implications.
What Works Growth will introduce their new series of ‘how to guides’ on understanding local economic performance. This first guide looks at skills, with future subjects in the series including GVA and productivity, the business base, and innovation.
Who should attend?
This workshop is open to all. It will be particularly useful for those in local or central government working on local growth policies, including skills, employment support, business support, access to finance, innovation, transport, and infrastructure.
