Join us for our OPEN DAY to celebrate our new Project! Bird-related activities will run throughout the day, alongside crafts and nibbles.

ABOUT THE EVENTJoin us for our OPEN DAY to reveal our new project 'Flight Path'!Saturday, 14th September 2024, from 10.30am-4pm.The Open Day is FREE to all (crafts, talks, and food); Art &amp; Writing classes are available for a £10 fee each, please book here prior to the event!ABOUT FLIGHT PATH:Through a combination of creative writing workshops, lectures, immersive walks and various mediums of art, we hope to raise awareness and a comprehensive understanding of how climate change is altering the behaviour and distribution of bird species worldwide. <h3>To kick off the project...</h3>Come along to the Learning Centre for a whole day of activities, talks and crafts - all about Birds!Through this page, you can book onto our 2 activities of the day; however, we encourage people to just pop in over during the day for a look around, and a few nibbles (hopefully a talk on birds, too!). <ul><li>ART CLASS: Puffins (watercolours) with Anne Little, 10.30am - 12.30pm. No experience necessary. In this informal class, Anne will help you with techniques for capturing the unique features and vibrant colours of these charming birds. If you do happen to have paper/watercolours, please bring them along. Our tutor will be able to provide some if not. </li><li>WRITING CLASS: All About Swallows with Jackie Pavlenko, 2.00pm - 4.00pm. No experience necessary. In this afternoon session, you will use bird migration as inspiration for creativity, and also a window onto the climate crisis, via information about factors affecting birds' lives, movements, breeding and so on. Jackie will encourage your levels of confidence in Writing as you go. Please bring some writing materials - paper, pen/pencils, etc. </li><li>The rest of the day, the centre will be open and we will have various bird-related crafts going on, and a few nibbles over lunchtime. Hopefully we will have a guest speaker to come and give a talk on birds and migration (to be confirmed).</li></ul>Please book for one or both events.The OPEN DAY can be attended without a ticket.ABOUT THE FUNDER:Lairg and District Learning Centre, along with 8 other centres throughout Scotland, are delighted to have been awarded a grant from the Scottish Government's £272k Climate Engagement Fund (CEF).The fund has been set up to increase Climate Change awareness and action in local communities through various activities such as community workshops, podcasts and green festivals, which will be supported from the latest round of Scottish Government funding. ABOUT OUR TUTORS:Anyone who has taken an art class with us before probably knows Anne Little! Anne is a very patient and competent tutor, whose passion for art is shown in her teaching style. She will help encourage even the shiest of beginners to find their creativity and apply it to the page. During this watercolour session, let your ideas flow! Jackie Pavlenko is an accomplished writer and has won some prestigious awards to prove it! Jackie's teaching style has been described as awe-inspiring.In this session, she will guide you through prose, poems and haikus, all in the name of the beautiful Swallow.
