Open Talmud Project 2016

The Open Talmud Projectis a cross-denominational, grass-roots initiative for close encounter with Talmud, and other Jewish texts, in a vibrant, supportive and intellectually open environment with excellent teachers, and a lovely, diverse group of people, including beginners and more experienced learners. Open Talmud Project is a cross-denominational, grass-roots initiative for close encounter with Talmud, and other Jewish texts, in a vibrant, supportive and intellectually open environment with excellent teachers, and a lovely, diverse group of people, including beginners and more experienced learners. OTP began in 2009, and this is its seventh and biggest summer yet! In 2016, we have our annual Open Talmud Weekend, running from the evening of Thursday 1st September until the end of Sunday 4th September. We are also, for the first time ever, offering some extra days of learning, beforehand, from Tuesday 30th August until Thursday 1st September as an OTP Pre-Weekend Intensive. So you can learn for a long weekend or for the whole week if you would like. This year our theme is Pushing Boundaries.

Open Talmud Project Weekend 2016 (1-4 September): From 7.30 pm on Thursday evening 1 September to 6pm on Sunday evening 4th September, with time off on Friday evening and Saturday morning for your own Shabbat plans. We are delighted that international teacher <A HREF="https://www.facebook.com/nechama.barash" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Nechama Goldman Barash</A> will be joining us for the whole week from <A HREF="https://www.facebook.com/pardesinstitute/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies</A>. Not to be missed! OTP Pre-Weekend Intensive 2016 (30 Aug-1 Sept): Tuesday morning 30th August to Thursday afternoon 1st September: a 3 day pre-Open Talmud intensive offering a chance to learn in a small group with a strong focus on building text skills. This can be attended as a stand-alone intensive course or in conjunction with the main Open Talmud Project weekend.

This year's theme is Pushing Boundaries! R. Eleazar says: “Since the day that the Temple was destroyed, a wall of iron has intervened between Israel and their Father in Heaven” ( b. Berahkot 32b). Beneath that almost unbreakable wall of iron, exiled from the Garden of Eden, we make and remake boundaries of time, space, experience, gender, law, language, clan, and species. This is the scope of the Talmud. It sees every boundary and pushes it. This year the goal of the Open Talmud Project is to push the limits of our understanding a little further. Open Talmud will be an extravaganza of Jewish texts, covering Talmud, Tanach, Midrash, Chasidut and contemporary philosophy. Cost for this Summer’s Open Talmud Project: Open Talmud is a grass-roots initiative. All money goes towards excellent teachers, a suitable venue, and some nice touches, like food, to build community. The team are volunteers. • This year, tickets are £95 if you get it before August 1st- get your ticket now. The cost then goes up to £110. • If you are a student or 25 and under and £95 is not possible, then there is an option to buy your ticket for just under £50. It is an important principle of Open Talmud Project that costs should never be a barrier to participation.
