Opening Up Research

A series of open research events throughout the academic year, open to all University of Manchester staff, postgraduate researchers, and early career researchers, aimed at promoting and facilitating open research initiatives within the academic community.

‘Opening up Research’ is a collaborative effort involving the Office for Open Research, the School of Engineering Open Research Lead, representatives from the United Kingdom Reproducibility Network (UKRN), and Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute.Our aim is to promote and facilitate open research initiatives and practices within The University of Manchester. We recognise the importance of transparency, inclusivity, and collaboration in research, and we are committed to creating an environment where these principles thrive.This year’s events programme is closely aligned with the <a href="https://www.openresearch.manchester.ac.uk/projects/or-skills-training/orsf/" title="https://www.openresearch.manchester.ac.uk/projects/or-skills-training/orsf/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Open Research Skills Framework</a>, which provides essential guidance on fostering openness throughout the research lifecycle. At this event we will explore the open software theme: developing and sharing open-source software and code to maximise the potential for reuse and contributes to robust, reproducible research methods.Date: Tuesday, 4 February 2025, 1-2.30pmLocation: University Place 2.220Speakers:<ul><li>Aman Goel: Research Software Engineer, Research IT.</li><li>Murilo Marinho: Open Research Fellow and Lecturer in Robotics Engineering Systems, Department of Electrical &amp; Electronic Engineering.</li></ul><ul><li>Alex Henderson: Open Research Fellow and Senior Technical Specialist (Digital Systems Architect), Department of Chemical Engineering.</li></ul><ul><li>Matt Parkes: Open Research Fellow and Research Statistician, Division of Population Health, Health Services Research &amp; Primary Care.</li></ul>Agenda:Hear from our speakers, including three <a href="https://www.openresearch.manchester.ac.uk/projects/or-skills-training/fellowship-programme/2024-2025-fellows/" title="https://www.openresearch.manchester.ac.uk/projects/or-skills-training/fellowship-programme/2024-2025-fellows/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Open Research Fellows</a>, as they discuss how they’ve developed and shared open-source software and code to support reuse and reproducibility in research. The session will include a one hour panel discussion, with time for tea/coffee, and networking with other attendees at the end.Please note this event is for The University of Manchester staff and students only.
