At this event, we share our expertise in Oracle-to-Postgres migrations for large businesses with multi-terabyte databases.Application systems migrations techniques from Oracle to PostgreSQL Due to a significant increase in Oracle license prices, many enterprise businesses migrate or consider migrating to open source databases. Why is PostgreSQL seen as a database of choice for enterprise customers? From the technical viewpoint, enterprises choose PostgreSQL as it provides the following features: 1) Extensive PL/pgSQL for functions and stored procedures creation. 2) Various modules for monitoring the entire RDBMS state. 3) Various tools for creating backups and restoring data from them. 4) Additions to SQL dialect for creating complex queries. 5) Built-in replication. 6) Exclusion constraints, partitioning. 7) Pl/Python for communication with various external services and many more. However, there may be some challenges related to data and code migration. In this presentation, we'll go through migration stages and the required steps for their completion. Then data migration tools will be covered, with their pros and cons explained. Then we'll look into code migration tools and possible problems and discuss how to solve them. Also, we'll list and explain several approaches to system downtime minimization. In short, we'll tackle all migration steps so you could understand what you need to do to make your system work on a different RDBMS.Speaker bio (Peter Petrov)Peter Petrov works for Postgres Professional as a Database Engineer since 2017.He has been working with Oracle RDBMS and PostgreSQL for 8 years and is now involved in consulting customers on correct business logic design and development using PL/pgSQL programming language, migrating data from Oracle to PostgreSQL, and optimizing database queries.Peter also participates in investigating various situations that occurred during PostgreSQL maintenance.Prior to Postgres Professional Peter worked in various software companies which implemented business logic by using PL/SQL and Java programming languages.
