Description

Our Man in the Moone

A performance on 31 August 2019 at 4:15pm

Whitbourne Village Hall Playing Field

Join EVERYBODY DANCE for Our Man in the Moone, an entertaining community performance full of stories, music and aerial dance, based on an almost forgotten, locally written novel.

On Saturday 31 August, at the playing fields of Whitbourne Village Hall, an outdoor rig will be alive with aerial dance depicting the travels of adventurer Domingo Gonsales, as he journeys to the moon in a contraption pulled by his trusty Ganzas - a specially trained flock of geese, played by community performers who have learned new aerial skills in a series of summer workshops.

A Whitbourne resident of the 17th century, Bishop Francis Godwin wrote a pioneering work of science fiction, called ‘The Man in the Moone’, predicting space travel, gravity and other scientific achievements of more recent history. Throughout the summer, Whitbourne village in Herefordshire is celebrating Godwin’s work through this unusual community arts project, culminating in a delightful, fun and intimate performance of ‘Our Man in the Moon’ in the idyllic setting of the rural Herefordshire countryside.

EVERYBODY DANCE is the charity leading the project: they work with people of all ages and abilities in fun and inclusive ways. With funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the project is bringing Francis Godwin’s tale to life with events during the summer, working with a local historian, writer, dance practitioners and storyteller to take ‘The Man in the Moone’ back into the community.

The wider project includes a book group, tours of the archives, dance and storytelling workshops with mainstream and special schools, creative dance sessions for elders, publication of a new version of the story in the parish magazine and a collection of short stories, poems and pictures about the project. A new beer has been launched by Teme Valley Brewery, to celebrate the project and Godwin’s work; ‘Our Man in the Moone’ ale will be available at the event.

TAKE PART!

There are lots of taster sessions happening over the summer for those who’d like to get involved as a performer or backstage (no experience necessary), please visit www.everybodydance.org.uk or email Rachel at rfeverybodydance@gmail.com for details.
