The government has issued some £12billion Covid-related contracts to private companies for personal protective equipment, medicines and virus testing and tracing. Some contracts have been awarded with no competition to companies with political connections but no apparent expertise in delivering medical supplies. And Government has published no information about £4billion of these contracts.The campaign group the Good Law Project, with a cross-party group of MPs, is suing the health secretary, Matt Hancock, in the high court, accusing his Department of “egregious and widespread failure to comply with legal duties and established policies”.Did the Government need to issue contracts without due process? Or did they, as Transparency International UK warned, use the crisis like a “blank cheque to get rid of controls around transparency and accountability” and pursue their privatisation agenda?John McDonnell MP will discuss these issues with Jolyon Maugham (The Good Law Project), Jatinder Hayer (Keep our NHS Public), Mark Serwotka (General Secretary, PCS Union) and Juliet Garside (The Guardian) at a Claim the Future event on Thursday 17 December at 4pm
