Painterly Monotype Workshop

This session covers Painterly Monotype, a process that uses materials and layering techniques to create one-of-a-kind original prints.

Monotype is a process where inks are used to make an image on a surface that is transferred to paper by either hand printing or with a press. These images are often painterly in effect and typically produce a single one-off image. However, the opportunity to layer colour and texture is afforded by the printing process, and secondary 'ghost prints' allow you to generate a series or a more complex layered image.

This in-person event is perfect if you enjoy painterly textures but are looking to expand your creative language or are looking to learn a new process entirely. You'll learn the basics of monotype before exploring how to push the process further with methods of layering, masking and stencilling, making several original prints by the end of the day. We will learn both hand-printing techniques and how to print with a press, so you can re-create the process at home. This course is suitable for beginners or those with experience who want to refresh their skills.

About the tutor:

Evangeline Morris is a contemporary print artist with extensive knowledge of printmaking techniques. She studied Fine Art at the University of Gloucester before undertaking a Masters in Fine Art Print at The University of the Arts London: Camberwell College. Her specialism is in intaglio and etching; however, her work utilises many traditional and contemporary printmaking processes. Having worked as a printmaking technician in university print departments and as an independent workshop facilitator, she has a broad knowledge of many printmaking techniques, as well as a contemporary understanding of their application.

Evangeline has exhibited her prints widely throughout the UK, including at Clifford Chance Postgraduate Print in London, Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair, Scottish Parliament and the Royal Academy Summer exhibition. Her work is held in the Clifford Chance contemporary print collections, having been awarded the Clifford Chance Postgraduate Print Purchase prize in 2022.

Printmaking is a passion, and she loves teaching people the different processes, whether it is their first steps into print or whether they are looking to develop. Print offers exciting possibilities for many creative processes.
