About this event

With attention spans shrinking along with budgets, the AI revolution has been casting its shadow towards the news industry. But what if AI, specifically AI generated video, could make news more accessible, memorable and cheaper to produce? Or are we playing with fire?

Samir Mallal is the former documentary filmmaker behind the short, Mission Impossible-style news packages that went viral this summer. In this panel, he discusses with journalists with on-the-ground reporting experience why he thinks Gen AI could be used to transform the news industry.

Amil Khan is a former Reuters Middle East correspondent and BBC investigative journalist. He founded Valent, an AI startup that tracks disinformation, with a Covid loan during the first lockdown.

Samir Mallal, a Sundance and Cannes Lions winning filmmaker, and Founder of OneDay a new studio that recently made Spiders in the Sky, a ‘cinematic’ news package about the Ukrainian attack on Russia’s bomber fleet using the latest.

Sophia Galler-Smith is an author, journalist and content creator credited with pioneering journalism on TikTok in the United Kingdom. Sophia’s investigative reporting for the BBC and VICE News has won her awards around the globe and her videos on TikTok and Instagram have been viewed more than 180 million times. She is a British Journalism Award winner, a Forbes Under 30 honoree and named one of the 25 most influential women in the UK by British Vogue in 2022.
