This panel discussion accompanies the exhibition 'Zeitline: The incremental development of a photographer', showcasing work by LCC Senior Lecturer Roger Hutchings. Industry panelists will explore Roger's work in the context of a wider discussion about photographic style, and the vital role of the photograph in remembering history while reminding us to look forward to the future.
Max Houghton has been writing on, for, with and about photographs since 2001, specialising in contemporary documentary photography. In 2015, Max organised three symposia, on Women and Wit in Photography at London College of Communication, Beyond the Visual Landscape at Southbank Club, Bristol and Autonomy of Self, Contemporary Conflict in Post-Ottoman States at Swedenborg Hall. Max Houghton was named among the top 50 industry professionals by Featureshoot. She is a senior lecturer in photography at London College of Communication and her research interested include art and terror, contemporary landscape and women in photography.
Roger Hutchings is an award-winning British documentary photographer who initially worked for the London Observer as a roving photojournalist covering British and world affairs. After leaving the newspaper he carried out a wide range of assignments for many of the world's leading magazines while developing documentary projects which went on to be internationally exhibited and published.
Roger was a Master at the World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass in 2001, Chairman of the World Press Photo Jury in 2002, and Chairman of the British Press Photographers' Awards 2007. He is currently Senior Lecturer in photojournalism and documentary photography at London College of Communication.
Colin Jacobson has been involved in the photography industry since the early 70s. Beginning with the Sunday Times Magazine, Colin went on to work as the picture editor for The Economist, The Observer Magazine and was founding picture editor with The Independent Magazine in 1988. After leaving journalism, he became course director of MA Photojournalism at the University of Westminster. He now freelances as curator and book editor, and is involved with the Photography Oxford Festival planned for 2017.
Ivy Lahon is Managing Picture Editor of Save The Children and commissions reportage and creative documentary photography and film worldwide. In the past she has picture edited for The Guardian and Time Out and spent 2 years working with Amnesty International on photographic projects including the first book by former Amnesty Secretary General Irene Khan and the imagery for Amnesty’s 50th anniversary in 2011.
She is interested in new takes on classic photojournalism, innovative ways of humanitarian storytelling and the cross over between fine art and documentary photography.
Patrick Sutherland is a photographer who undertakes personal documentary projects. His first book Wetland, published with writer Adam Nicolson, resulted from two years living and working in the Somerset Levels.
For over two decades Patrick has been documenting the culturally Tibetan communities of the Spiti Valley in North India. A more recent project on the Buchen, travelling lay religious theatre performers, exorcists, musicians and healers unique to Spiti, was triggered by their negative reaction to his reportage photographs of them and led to an exhibition at the Pitt Rivers Museum. Patrick is currently researching the emerging genre of computer-modified photographs displayed in Spiti houses.
Patrick is Professor of Documentary Photography at the University of the Arts London.
'Zeitline: The incremental development of a photographer' (7-26 April) explores the concept of photographic style through Hutchings’s war photographs, glimpses into the world of fashion and later abstracted colour studies. How does style manifest itself across a wide range of subjects and evolve over time and experience? From serious reportage to contemplative colour images, signature ideas of geometry and intensity run throughout Hutchings’s work despite changing motivations and influences.
