Birmingham City University

Pathways is a one-day, multi-venue showcase event that explores ways of opening new avenues for collaborative working between academic researchers and non-academic partners. As Birmingham City University (BCU) aspires to become a ‘civic university’, researchers are encouraged to take an ever more active stake in the impact of their research. At the same time, cultural creative industries, particularly here in Birmingham, are leading the sector to explore alternative pathways to securing sustainability for their work.This event invites a conversation around how we might work together, the challenges we would need to address, and pathways towards more strategic and sustainable collaborative working.

Welcome & introduction

Anthony Downey presents a series of public-engagement initiatives from his current project ‘GCRF Network Plus: Disability Under Siege”. Through cultural practices and institutions, the network has the overarching objective of providing the intellectual, financial and logistical resources required by local practitioners to deliver a transformational step change in education provision for children with disabilities in Lebanon, the occupied Palestinian territories, and Jordan.

Disability Under Siege 

Dima Saber and Maria Carrion discuss the success of their work exposing human rights abuses through citizen-led journalism in regions of conflict. How partnerships have evolved through devolving leadership, and the challenge of scaling projects globally, and the connection between activism and research. 

Check Global: Letting Go

A panel discussion around shared goals, challenges/tensions between academic, industry, and creative sectors, and the potential of working together.  The panel will be Nick Gebhardt (Associate Dean for Research, ADM) Holly Doron (CoLab Dudley/BCU PhD candidate) Pelego Powell (Creative and Artistic Director - Aston Performing Arts Academy) Martin Cox (ADM Fellow for Impact & Engagement)

One of the most enduring issues around talking about impact in humanities
research in general, and research in the arts in particular, is the challenge of
evaluating the quality of experience. In this event, long-term RBC partner
organisations Fizzle and TDE Promotions curate an evening of collective exploration
of these themes.
For over 20 years, musician-led Fizzle has been promoting improvised music in
Birmingham and has worked closely with TDE Promotions since its founding in 2016.
Together they are keen to find ways to integrate research into their working practices and have invited musicians Fiona Troon and James McIlwrath to respond to the theme of audience research. They will invite musicians and listeners alike to
participate in two newly commissioned projects that allow us to collectively explore
creative approaches to feedback and impact gathering.
