This public seminar will discuss the complex relation between political activism and academia.

This public seminar will discuss the complex relation between political activism and academia, asking some of the protagonists to reflect on their experiences. From mass student movements to prominent roles in government; from frontline political involvement back to the blackboard.From the university courtyard to congress, L&#x27;athénée jusq’à l&#x27;Assemblée, universitet til stortinget, y desde el Colegio hasta el Congreso Nacional, the pathways connecting the worlds of scholarship and the worlds of politics have always been heavily travelled. And they pass in both directions. But what of this relationship historically and geographically? How have scholars and scholarly institutions, be it universities or policy units, influenced - indeed at times been absorbed by - the political realm. How does scholarly knowledge and the hard won learning of university life translate into active politics? What compromises are made? What insights won?About the main speaker<a href="https://www.gob.cl/en/ministries/ministry-of-economy-development-and-tourism/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Professor Nicolas Grau Veloso</a> is the recently appointed Minister of the Economy, Development and Tourism of Chile. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Pennsylvania and a B.A. and M.Sc. in economics from the Universidad de Chile.Until February 2022, he was a professor of economics at the Universidad de Chile and adjunct researcher at the Centro de Conflicto y Cohesión Social (COES).Discussants<a href="https://notendur.hi.is/gylfason/inenglish.htm" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Thorvaldur Gylfason</a> is Professor of Economics at the University of Iceland and former member of Iceland&#x27;s Constitutional Assembly.<a href="https://sofiacollignon.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dr Sofia Collignon</a> is Lecturer in Politics at Queen Mary University of London.<a href="https://www.qmul.ac.uk/mei/staff/dr-patrick-diamond.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dr Patrick Diamond</a>, Director of Mile End Institute &amp; Senior Lecturer in Public Policy, will introduce the event. <a href="https://www.prio.org/people/6517" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Simon Reid-Henry</a>, Research Professor at The Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) and <a href="https://www.qmul.ac.uk/politics/staff/profiles/sajuriajavier.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dr Javier Sajuria</a>, Reader in Comparative Politics, Deputy Dean Education (Queen Mary University of London) will chair the event.This event is organised by <a href="https://www.qmul.ac.uk/ihss/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">the Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences</a>, <a href="https://www.qmul.ac.uk/mei/about-us/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">the Mile End Institute</a>, and <a href="https://www.qmul.ac.uk/sef/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">the School of Economics and Finance</a> at Queen Mary University of London.*The event will be photographed.
