198 Contemporary Arts and Learning is a registered charity based in Brixton. We are a venue for the exhibition of visual arts, a community hub and an arts education centre which opened in December 1988, contributing to the regeneration of Brixton following the race riots of the 1980s. Known initially as Roots Community and then 198 Gallery, 198 has grown from a community arts space, which helped nurture the Black Arts movement into a contemporary visual arts organisation searching out artistic excellence and investing in emerging talents with a particular focus on supporting the development of young people. A two-part series raising funds for hurricane Melissa relief

Join us at <a href="https://www.198.org.uk/contemporary-art" title="https://www.198.org.uk/contemporary-art" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">198CAL</a> for a two-part fundraising series in support of Hurricane Melissa recovery efforts, centring gathering, healing, art and solidarity. Together, we’ll reflect on the devastations and resilience shaping our world — from genocide in Sudan, Congo and Palestine to ongoing struggles for climate justice — while raising vital funds for communities rebuilding in the Caribbean. 21 November — Caribbean Film Screening An evening of film, conversation and collective witnessing, honouring Caribbean stories of resilience. Screening Alan Greenberg’s Land of Look Behind (1982), an extraordinary but overlooked document of Jamaica in the early 1980s—a nation negotiating the psychic and material afterlives of Independence, neocolonialism, and a fading dream of socialism in the wake of U.S. imperial incursions. Filmed after Bob Marley’s assassination, the film moves between the myth-soaked mountains of Cockpit Country and the streets of Kingston, tracing the sounds and scenes of a nation mourning and the philosophies that shape the social and spiritual landscape. Proceeds will go toward supporting<a href="https://www.solidarityyaadjamaica.org/" title="https://www.solidarityyaadjamaica.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> Solidarity Yaad International.</a> 29 November — Holistic Day: Rest, Reflection &amp; Care Workshops in mindfulness, movement and making — a space to slow down, reconnect and practise collective care, closing with music and performances in the evening.<h3> </h3>Sessions: Yoga | 2-3PM Meditation | 7-8PM Workshops: Ceramics | 1-4PM Textile Collage &amp; Craft | 3-6PM Music &amp; Performances | 8-11PM Caribbean designer pop up store by a dutty world | 1-6PM Proceeds will go toward supporting <a href="https://www.connekja.com/archive" title="https://www.connekja.com/archive" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Connekja</a>, as well as individual people and organisations on the ground in the Caribbean. Open to all throughout the day. Sessions and workshops are scheduled at the times listed above.
