Learning about Partition: An Introduction Sit down with Partition Education Group members, Professor Sarah Ansari, Professor Will Gould and Doctor Deborah Sutton to learn more about the events of the 1947 Partition of India, hosted by our Chair, Raj Unsworth. As educators they will also discuss the importance of teaching the Partition of India in the British curriculum, and will be sharing their experiences with teaching South Asian history, and why it’s so closely linked with British History.Professor Sarah Ansari: Professor Sarah Ansari is a historian of South Asia (aka the Indian subcontinent). Much of her research focuses on the province of Sindh (today in Pakistan), and more broadly explores issues of religion, migration, identity, citizenship, and gender. Her latest monograph (Boundaries of Belonging, CUP 2019, co-written with William Gould) explores citizenship and rights in early independent India and Pakistan. Her research interests tend to focus on the history of (1) the province of Sindh and its mega-port city of Karachi, and (2) the lives of women in South Asia. Professor Will Gould:William Gould is Professor of Indian History who specialises in mid 20th Century histories of citizenship in South Asia. He has recently worked with a street theatre/political lobbying organisation in western India, to produce a historical documentary detailing the situation of India’s Denotified and Nomadic Tribes. The film has been taken up by policymakers and a central government Commission on Tribal Affairs in India. Doctor Deborah Sutton:Doctor Deborah Sutton has a forthcoming monograph that explores the ways in which the Hindu temple was understood during the colonial intervention of the nineteenth and twentieth century. She is interested in the physical pasts of Delhi; their animation in the quotidian life of the city, their colonial pasts and their digital futures. She is also involved in the creation of three cultural heritage apps in India and Pakistan: Delhi Partition City, Karachi City and Dilli, Ghadr se Azaadi tak. These apps have been created by a new software authoring tool: safarnama.Partition Education Group is an official campaign for the inclusion of Partition, South-Asian &amp; British colonial history within the UK education system, in partnership with South Asian Heritage Month.
