About the workshop:

Nowadays our computers, phones, and tablets are filled with personal data – but how can we keep that sensitive information out of the wrong hands? In this workshop, you’ll learn about the most common cyber security attacks, but more importantly how to take steps to protect yourself. You’ll see live demonstrations of attacks and learn how to spot them. These tips will help you feel more confident about using a computer safely, but most importantly the steps you can take to protect the data you hold. No technical knowledge is required.

Learning outcomes:

Practical Exercise: Has your personal data been stolen?
Storing your personal data securely (on laptops, mobiles, storage devices)
Sharing your personal data securely (secure connection, secure messaging apps)
Protecting your personal data.

About Access Data:

Access Data is an employability service for unemployed and low-income Edinburgh parents who want to enhance their digital and data skills to either improve their chances in the job market in general or train specifically for jobs in the data and digital sectors.

We provide tailored support into education, training or employment, with a focus on promoting and explaining – in plain English – the fascinating world of data and all that is related to it. The project is made both for those who already have some data-related knowledge and experience, as well as for the complete beginners with no previous interest in data, or even no digital skills at all.

With us participants can:

Gain or improve digital skills
Learn what data is and how it can be used at work and at home
Gain data skills and other skills essential to get employed
Improve chances for employment or in-work progression in various sectors
Train or re-train for jobs in the data and digital sectors

Our offer:

Info Sessions: a chance to learn more about the project and get answers to any questions about it (currently delivered on demand)
Data Taster Sessions: a chance to explore the world of data presented in plain English and through real life examples related to parents’ interests
1:1 tailored support on every step of the way, including help with any challenges the participant might face
Digital Skills Training
Support into and during suitable courses
Employability Skills Training

Eligibility:

You can get our help if you are a parent or have parental responsibilities, you live in the City of Edinburgh, you are either unemployed or on a low income, and you also belong in at least one of the listed groups:

You are disabled or have a disabled child
You are from a minority ethnic background
You are a lone parent
You have 3 or more children
You have a child below 1 year of age
You are below 25 years of age
