The Catalyst

<p>G﻿enerative AI is a hot topic right now - in mainstream news as well as in the world of science and technology - but how much do we really know about its capabilities, limitations, and the possibilities going forward? What might the implications of generative AI be, whether economic, philosophical, or social? And, while many of us are now familiar with ChatGPT and Midjourney, for example, what might be next?</p><p>J﻿oin us, the <strong>National Innovation Centre for Data</strong>, and some very special guests  in our TED Theatre at <a href="https://www.thecatalystnewcastle.co.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Catalyst</a> from <strong>4.00 p.m.</strong> on <strong>Thursday 8th June</strong> for an exciting, interactive panel discussion on all things generative AI.</p><p>D﻿ata science experts from our team will be joined by an array of expert panellists for a round of lightning talks sharing their perspectives, followed by an interactive panel discussion chaired by another very special guest.</p><p>I﻿f you're curious about generative AI, or even if you're up to speed on the latest developments in this fast-evolving field, we'd love for you to join us for what promises to be a timely and thought-provoking session!</p><p></p>

<h2>A﻿bout the Panellists</h2><h3></h3><h3>Colin Eberhardt</h3><h3>Chief Technology Officer, Scott Logic</h3><p>Colin is <strong>Chief Technology Officer</strong> at Scott Logic, a growing UK software consultancy that serves financial services and public sector clients. He is a prolific technical author, blogger and speaker on a wide range of technologies. He has a keen interest in open-source, specifically how we address the associated sustainability and security challenges, and how open-source technology is driving the latest advances in generative AI.</p><p></p><h3>D﻿r Christine Cuskley</h3><h3>L﻿ecturer in Language and Cognition, Newcastle University</h3><p>D﻿r Christine Cuskley is <strong>Lecturer in Language and Cognition</strong> at Newcastle University and Co-Director of the University's Centre for Behaviour and Evolution. She is also a founding member of the Language Evolution, Acquisition and Development Group. Collaborating with linguists, psychologists, and complex systems scientists, Dr Cuskley studies the emergence, evolution, and dynamics of human language. </p><p>Her approach triangulates evidence from web-based experiments, corpora and naturalistic data, and agent-based modelling.</p><p></p><h3>D﻿r David Kennedy</h3><h3>Dean of Digital Education, Newcastle University</h3><p>D﻿r David Kennedy is <strong>Dean of Digital Education </strong>at Newcastle University and is currently leading the University's education response to the recent advances in generative AI. He was previously in the Faculty of Medical Sciences for more than a decade, holding a variety of senior roles across FMS and the School of Medicine, before taking up the newly created Digital Dean of Education position in late 2022.</p><p></p><h3>D﻿r Maciej Misiura</h3><h3>Data Scientist, National Innovation Centre for Data</h3><p>M﻿aciej, or Mac as he's known to all of us here, is a <strong>Data Scientist</strong> with particular expertise in leveraging statistical and machine learning techniques to tackle complex business challenges. He has supported a diverse range of clients including everything from dynamic start-ups to FTSE 100 corporations, and he is particularly interested in large language models and AI assurance, making him an invaluable asset in driving innovation and success.</p><h3></h3><h3>K﻿irsten Edmondson</h3><h3>N﻿orth East Digital Leader, Mentor and Speaker</h3><p>Kirsten is a North East-based <strong>Digital Leader, Mentor and Speaker </strong>who has extensive experience in creating and delivering digital and data solutions for a wide variety of organisations, including both commercial and non-profit organisations. She was previously Head of Software Development: Authentication at De La Rue and Head of Digital Experience at Newcastle University.</p><p>S﻿he is also a committed mentor and speaker, and is passionate about promoting DE&I and digital inclusion.</p><p></p><h2>A﻿bout the Chair</h2><h3></h3><h3>H﻿annah Underwood</h3><h3>Co-Founder, Insightano</h3><p>H﻿annah is a visionary social sector leader with a passion for data, technology, innovation, and co-creation. She has extensive experience in purpose-driven and impactful organisations, having spent 15 years as the CEO of North East charity The Key, and serving as a Trustee and Non-Executive Director for various organisations including DataKind UK, Virgin Money Foundation, Newcastle University, and Livin Housing.</p><p>O﻿ver the past year, Hannah has been consulting with charities, funders, and corporate foundations, helping them to think about and use data strategically. In January, she co-founded <strong>Insightano </strong>with Data Architect Callum Robson-Port, a new venture with an ambition to revolutionise the use of data within the social sector.</p>
