In 1819, at St. Peter's Field, Manchester, a huge peaceful rally was held for democracy. Then, as now, the ruling class didn't like it.

Only two per cent of the population could vote but the many paid the price for Wellington’s battle at Waterloo in 1815. Troops came home to unemployment, social unrest and wage cuts, while Wellington received £750,000 from the Prime Minister. One officer, General Byng, became Commander of the Northern District, an area with no representation in Parliament and a cruel, intolerant judiciary.August 1819, a large, unarmed crowd, assembles on St. Peter’s Field, Manchester to hear the famed orator, Henry Hunt, speak about the need for voting reform. The events that follow become infamous. An enraged Percy Shelley penned: ‘The Masque of Anarchy’. It includes his famous verse: “Rise like lions after slumber, In unvanquishable number, Shake your chains to earth like dew, Which in sleep had fallen on you, Ye are many – they are few.”History is written by the victors and Leigh complains not enough is taught in schools about such events. Peterloo helps to put that right and is also a tribute to reformers of the past.
