Our Favourite Places

One city. Six hours. Six photos.
Get set: the first Photomarathon Sheffield contest is coming this October.
<H3>What?</H3>
Photomarathon Sheffield is a photography competition unlike any other. It’s more of a photographic adventure – challenging entrants take 6 photos in 6 hours inspired by topics that’ll be announced on the day in Sheffield.
The photomarathon idea was born in 1985 in Madrid and variations on the event have since featured in the cultural calendars of cities from Beirut to Berlin, New York to Nairobi, Stockholm to Sydney. Isn’t it about time Sheffield joined in the fun?
Organised by <A HREF="http://www.ourfaveplaces.co.uk/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Our Favourite Places</A>, Photomarathon Sheffield will be free and open to 150 entrants. Unlike actual marathons, there’s no need to be able to run, or even walk, fast. All you need is any kind of digital camera or smartphone, a keen eye, and a decent amount of curiosity. 
Photomarathon Sheffield is supported by and inspired by the <A HREF="http://www.ourfaveplaces.co.uk/events/more/year-of-making-2016" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Year of Making</A>; topics will be open to interpretation, and the panel of judges will pick winners based on creativity, spontaneity, inventiveness and humour, rather than technical knowhow.
After the event, each entrants’ set of 6 photos will go into an exhibition at <A HREF="http://www.ourfaveplaces.co.uk/venues/culture/millennium-gallery" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Millennium Gallery</A>. So that’ll be an exhibition of 900 photos, from 150 perspectives, together showing one day in the life of the city.
<H3>When?</H3>
Saturday 8 October.
Check-in opens at 9:30am at Photomarathon Sheffield HQ in the Winter Garden. You'll be given the 6 topics at check-in and you have from 10am until 4pm to get snapping. Take as long as you like within those 6 hours (if you’d like to check in at 3:30pm and whizz through it, that’s fine. Or if you’re done by midday, also fine).
Once you have 6 photos you’re happy with, return to HQ (open until 5pm) to submit them.
The Photomarathon Sheffield exhibition will take place throughout November in Millennium Gallery – more details on that soon.
<H3>Where?</H3>
Anywhere and everywhere in Sheffield! After checking in at the Winter Garden, you’re free to roam the city with your camera. If you're stuck for inspiration, don't worry – you'll get some suggestions for photogenic places at check-in.
Just keep your wits about you as you seek out the perfect shot, stick with your friends/family, and make sure you don’t trespass onto private property or take a photo of someone without asking first.
<H3>Who?</H3>
Anyone can join in Photomarathon Sheffield – amateur and professional photographers, residents and visitors, kids and grown-ups alike (though under-16s should be accompanied by a guardian).
Only registered entrants' photos will be shown in the exhibition, though friends, family and others can join them on the day and share their snaps on social media – #PhotomarathonSHF.

Rules &amp; guidelines: – Digital cameras and smartphones only – no film cameras. – The event is 10am-4pm. Use as much or as little of this time as you like (e.g. if you don’t want to check in until 1pm, that’s fine; or if you’re finished and ready to submit your photos by midday, also fine). – You must submit the 6 photos in the order of the list of topics given on the day.  – Feel free to use tripods, filters and flashguns. – Digital camera images should be shot in JPEG format, not RAW. – Submit your images unedited. – Photos taken before 10am or after 4pm on 8 October will not be accepted. – We will download your images using a memory card readers or USB cable. If your memory card is not standard, please bring your own card reader. If you’re entering with a smartphone, bring your own USB cable to connect it to our computers. – Copyright remains with the photographer. By entering the competition, you give permission for Photomarathon Sheffield to use your images in the exhibition and promotional materials. Photomarathon Sheffield will not pass on your images to a third party without permission. – A panel of judges from Sheffield’s photography community will choose a winner, second place and third place in each topic as well as overall. – All images taken during the event will be printed and included in the exhibition at Millennium Gallery in November, with the winning images highlighted. – Photomarathon Sheffield reserves the right to disqualify an entrant at its discretion. – Photomarathon Sheffield cannot accept responsibility for any lost or damaged cameras, memory cards or kit.
