Thursday evenings 6.30 - 9.00pm for eight weeks, 23rd October - 11th December 2025.

Of all the Eastern bloc countries, Czechoslovakia arguably boasted the most imaginative and experimental film culture. The New Wave of the 1960s and 70s brought it international acclaim, though many of its most creative works were banned at home. Yet this ‘golden age’ developed out of a popular and successful film industry dating back to the country’s creation in 1918. In this new course, we will explore the masterpieces of the New Wave as well as looking back to the earlier history of Czech and Slovak cinema. The course will be illustrated with complete features and numerous extracts.

Tutor: Matthew Jarron

Matthew is Curator of Museum Services at the University of Dundee, looking after a collection of over 30,000 objects, artworks and specimens and running the D’Arcy Thompson Zoology Museum, the Tayside Medical History Museum, and the exhibition programme in the Tower Foyer & Lamb Galleries. He also has a lifelong passion for cinema and has taught film history evening classes in Dundee since 2001.
