About this event

  • 1 day

This is an exciting two-day intensive course focusing on plaster casting from waste moulds to plaster piece moulds, to eventually casting a sculpture and looking at finishing options.

The course will cover the following:

You will learn mould making and how to cast in different materials, enabling you to create a finished piece from your casts.

As the group will be working on many different types of moulds this is a great opportunity to get an overview of what is possible for mould making and casting in a variety of materials, making this course ideal for beginners or makers wishing to work in new ways.

Day one

You will model a quick clay sculpture and create a plaster waste mould from this to cast in fast set concrete. Waste moulds are single use as they are destroyed during the process. Participants then have the option to cast a small object they have brought in, or select something from around the workshop to make a plaster piece mould. Piece moulds are made of more than one interlocking parts and can be reused for making multiple casts.

Day two

You will finish the plaster piece mould and have the option to use this to make a wax cast. The concrete cast from the previous day will be chipped out of its plaster waste mould and cleaned up.

When selecting an object to bring in to cast, make sure that it is a simple three dimensional shape, about hand-sized or slightly larger and preferably something with volume. It can be made of wood, stone, plastic, metal or ceramic. Please bring the object on the first day.

Open to all levels including beginners.

Old clothes are essential as this course gets very messy and we recommend heavy-duty boots.
