We're Back! Love the Lea: Plastic-Free Hackney's Monthly Covid-Safe Litter Pick

About this Event

We're Back!

Plastic-Free Hackney's Monthly Litter Pick

Sunday 25 April

From 10am (with staggered starts)

Princess of Wales pub car park E5 9RB

Spring is upon us and the River Lea and surrounding canals are in desperate need of attention.

Plastic-Free Hackney are revving up for our first Monthly Litter Pick on Sunday 25 April.

Our litter picks are planned to be Covid Safe events - with groups limited to 6 people, physical distancing and staggered time starts.

As ever, please come dressed in robust outdoor clothes with appropriate footwear (no open toed shoes). If it is hot, bring some water, sunscreen and a sunhat. We also request that all volunteers wear face coverings.

Public loos are not readily available. We advise that you 'go' before you arrive ;)

If you'd like to litter pick for the full 2 hours, make sure you book a ticket for the 10am slot!

Please note that it will be compulsory to book an Eventbrite ticket in advance of coming to the litterpick.

Below we've set out how we will be running the litter pick. Please do read through the outline below it since things will be different to how we've run them in the past.

Tickets are limited, so please do only book if you know that you're going to come. If plans change we'd be grateful if you could cancel your ticket so we can ensure as many bodies are out there as possible removing the pollution.

We know it seems like there are many hoops to jump through, but our canal is so in need of our attention and we are really grateful to you, wonderful volunteer warriors, for accepting these changes to our litter picks.

How we'll be running the litter picks

1. Booking

It's always helpful for us to know who is coming, but for Litter Picks during the pandemic it will be compulsory to book a ticket in advance. This will also enable us to contact you if necessary when the track and trace system is implemented.

Choose a 5 minute slot to start your litter pick. These are limited to groups of 5. We'd be grateful if you could book for the first available time slot. You will only be able to book one ticket, so if you're coming with a friend/family member you will each need to individually book your own tickets. If you are bringing a child, please book 2 tickets - 1 for you and 1 for the child.

2. PPE

Please bring your own mask and hand sanitiser too. We will also have hand sanitiser available at the litter pick. Although we are outside we request that volunteers wear face coverings to protect those around them.

3. Equipment

As usual we will provide litter pickers, hoops and sacks. Plastic-Free Hackney will clean all this equipment before and after use. Please touch only the things that you will be using on the litter pick and keep personal belongings to a minimum - you will need to carry them with you. Only bring food and drink if you are also carrying your own hand sanitiser so that you can clean your hands before eating or drinking.

4. Travel

Please avoid using public transport if you can - we encourage you to walk or cycle.

5. You

If you are feeling ill or have displayed any symptoms of COVID-19 in the last 14 days - prior to the litter pick - please do not attend. If you have any underlying health issues or are over 70 and have not had 2 vaccinations for coronavirus, we ask that you please do not attend. When litter picking please avoid busy areas, if you see somewhere is narrow or has people gathering there, move somewhere spacious such as Hackney Marshes.

6. Arrival

Please arrive at your allocated time. And be prepared to wait at a safe distance if you are early. We will use the car park at the Princess of Wales pub to form a physically distanced queue. We will the take temperatures of all volunteers with a non-contact thermometer.

7. Departure

We will give you a return time of 1.5 hours after you start to return your litter picking kit. That way we can make sure that there is a staggered return. If you would like to litter pick for the full 2 hours, make sure you book in the 10am slot.
