Come and join us at our North East Regional "Plastic Pollution - What's the Solution" conference event to celebrate the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) World Environment Day on 5th June 2018.

The event, hosted by Climate Action North East will focus on the Plastic Pollution agenda highlighting current issues with Single Use Plastic and discussing potential solutions.



SPEAKERS

  • Dr. Laura Foster, Head of Clean Seas, Marine Conservation Society - presenting on MCS Campaigns, strategies and projects including Great British Beach Clean and the work MCS are undertaking globally, nationally and regionally to address plastic pollution.
  • Emily Cunningham, Marine Conservation Practitioner - Emily Cunningham, Marine Conservation Professional - Emily will speak about nurdles as well as the exciting new Seascape project set to cover the Tyne to Tees coast. Emily will also lead a Nurdle Hunt on the local beach in the afternoon.
  • Climate Action North East - Sharon Lashley/Anna Lisa Mills/ Jennifer Clair Robson will talk about the new Initiative Green Heart which helps schools, communities and business access projects to help combat plastic pollution, raise awareness of litter and waste and also take action on climate change
  • Tom Parkin, Owner Sue's Cafe, Roker, Sunderland - Tom will tell his story of how as a local business they work with local schools on litter awareness and coastal regeneration projects and how they have implemented changes to eliminate single use plastics
  • Emmajo Tuczemskyi Haslam, Driftwood Life/Surfers Against Sewage - Local business owner Emmajo Tuczemskyi Haslam as founder of Drifwood Life Plastic Free Whtiley Bay and local Surfers Against Sewage groups will speak about her work with local schools in raising awareness of plastic pollution and beach litter and how she delivers her Surfers Agains Sewage work in Whitley Bay and the surrounding area
  • Steve Ashton, Tees Valley Wildlife Trust - Part of the River Tees Rediscovered project – The Tees Valley Wildlife Trust’s project addresses the needs of coastal and wading bird species on the River Tees. The project has created new and improved feeding, roosting and breeding habitat and examines human disturbance including plastic pollution through awareness raising, engagement and education. Steve will also speak about the Make Marske Plastic Free project.
  • Dr Eleni Iacovidou, University of Leeds – presenting how perceived quality affects the circularity of plastic packaging, providing insights to promising innovations that can increase recycling.
  • Have you got the bottle - campaign group working on the Deposit Return Scheme for Scotland - updates will be provided via the Marine Conservation Society.
  • Northumbrian Water will also be providing information and an update on their involvement in the "Refill" project.
