Overview

On this two day course you will be guided through the whole process to make your own Pole Lathe to take home with you.

Two-Day Pole Lathe Making Course

Step into the world of traditional woodworking with our immersive two-day Pole Lathe Making Course. The pole lathe is a reciprocating lathe with origins dating back to the Viking era, traditionally powered by a springy pole. In this course, we introduce a practical modern adaptation by using a bungee cord to power the lathe, creating a system that is both efficient and accessible while remaining true to its historical roots.

Our pole lathe design draws inspiration from the acclaimed work of Mike Abbott, as featured in his book Working with Wood, the Natural Way. The course combines time-honoured craftsmanship with practical contemporary techniques, enabling you to build a robust and proven woodworking tool that has stood the test of time.

Day One focuses on constructing the main structure of the lathe. You will build the Manx-style adjustable leg system and the lathe bed, made from treated softwood for strength and durability. Under expert guidance, you’ll learn accurate measuring, cutting, and assembly techniques to ensure a stable and long-lasting foundation. By the end of the day, the primary structure of your pole lathe will be fully assembled and ready for completion.

Day Two is dedicated to the finer components that bring the lathe to life. You will craft the poppets from hardwoods such as beech or ash, along with the treadle—both essential to smooth and efficient operation. Our instructors will provide detailed demonstrations and hands-on support, helping you achieve precise alignment and reliable performance.

Once complete, you’ll have the opportunity to use your pole lathe and experience the pleasure of turning greenwood. Enjoy the distinctive scent, texture, and responsiveness of freshly cut timber as you put your new skills into practice. By the end of the course, you’ll leave with a fully functional pole lathe, valuable woodworking skills, and a deeper appreciation of traditional craft techniques.
