Event description

Description

Join us for a walk through Shrewsbury Park identifying which plants are in bloom and taking samples of pollen using tweezers and poly bags - also any honey bees foraging on the plants can be dabbed and marked!

We can accommodate more than 10 on the walk but only 10 at the Apiary session

We then move to the Apiary (on Shooters Hill Road) where we can open up some hives and compare the pollen stored within, we might catch one or two of the earlier marked bees returning to the hives and compare the pollen being carried on their pollen baskets, and if we are really diligent and lucky we might catch a marked bee returning to dance on the frame to show its sisters the distances and location of the pollen source - we will need a pocket compass for this - also we might examine some microscopic slides of pollen samples.

Children are welcome on the Park walk, but not at the Apiary session held at the Council's depot, which means it could be dangerous for them - also, no pet dogs please!
