Event description

Description

At this event in partnership with Architecture & Design Scotland, we’ll be bringing together local people and organisations to explore the power of collaboration in shaping places. We’ll look at what’s happening in Portobello and the surrounding shoreline communities to identify the provision of facilities, activities and services. We’ll go on to explore the potential to further connect people, projects and assets and to develop shared sense of place along Edinburgh’s shoreline communities through a collaborative approach to placemaking.

Afternoon drop-in | 3:15 - 6pm

During this session, you are invited to share your views on what is already happening in the area. Help us create a visual map of local activities, services, and initiatives in Portobello and its neighbouring communities. Tell us about how local actions link to the physical qualities of the Edinburgh shoreline, and the ways they come together to make a great place to live, work and play. Please note you do not need to register for the drop-in afternoon.

Community co-design & placemaking workshop outline | 6-9pm

Our evening cross-pollination workshop is an active space where we will focus on making connections to enhance what is already happening and to activate new initiatives in local places and spaces. We’ll round up the evening with a discussion about the potential for this collaborative approach to mobilise joint action, as well as how this can enrich more traditional approaches to development and regeneration on the Edinburgh shoreline, and beyond.

A light buffet dinner will be served during the evening workshop.

About the Series

Community-led and community-engaged design are increasingly part of the narrative of development and regeneration, but what does this really mean in practice for those involved? How can we navigate the language and various approaches of people-centred design and ensure that these processes enable agency for local people? We Design events are active spaces, in which participants work together to develop ideas, proposals and prototypes which challenge their own and other people’s perceptions of design and placemaking.

We Design launched in London on Wednesday, 17 October, with BEYOND BUZZWORDS: the language of collaborative design. At this event, we explored the different ways we talk about and enable people’s involvement in design, challenging and formulating definitions, collecting stories and identifying new opportunities for different types of collaborative design. Read about it here.

The series continued with REIMAGINING MOORFOOT: co-design, connections and city spaces. For this hands-on event, groups worked together in teams to co-design public space proposals. Read about the event here.

After the event in Edinburgh, we’ll return back to London with our round-up sharing event on 26 March 2019.
