This talk looks at the basics of beekeeping, displacement, disease, queen rearing,honey, feeding, overwintering, honeybee cognition, but includes a considerationof the effects of climate change and microelectronics. The honeybee is 40 millionyears old. The honeybee supraorganism is 30 million years old. We are onlyherding animals aspiring to become social. All living creatures are born into astate of constant warfare. Our greatest achievement is that we have created raremoments of relative peace, unique in biology.A bit more about Professor Robert Pickard...Robert Pickard is Emeritus Professor of Neurobiology at the University of Cardiff and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, the Royal Society of Medicine and the Learned Society of Wales. He is Patron of the Welsh Beekeepers Association, Chair of the International Bee Research Association, President of the Central Association of Beekeepers, and a former Editor of the Journal of Apicultural Research. Formerly, he was Chair of the UK Consumers' Association, Which?, and Director-General of the British Nutrition Foundation.
