This talk is being delivered in-person and online. Please join us for a talk entitled "Power, Profits &amp; Making of Health Risks: Perspectives from India" by Dr Upendra Bhojani, Senior Fellow at the Institute of Public Health, Bengaluru, India. About the talkCommercial interests and entities are driving some of the major addictions and epidemics of our times, referred to within public health as ‘commercial determinants of health’. Based on his prestigious DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance fellowships, Dr Bhojani will share his findings from a couple of major research projects in the area of psychoactive substance addiction using a political economy lens. These works explore how commercial practices and broader structural factors, including colonialism, shaped tobacco and other psychoactive substance use in Indian society. The talk will also briefly touch upon insights from Upendra's efforts at capacity and field building around commercial determinants of health including indigenising these concepts for their meaningful application in India.A light vegetarian/vegan lunch and refreshments will be provided.
