Problem solving is a core element of the primary national curriculum and is a crucial aspect of pupil learning in mathematics, enabling pupils to see the true nature and beauty of mathematics. Problem solving opportunities enrich pupil learning to build flexibly, resilience and application of prior knowledge whilst activating hard thinking.

This session will support delegates to understand and recognise the importance of problem solving and the impact it has in developing children's understanding of mathematics. Delegates will explore what makes an effective problem solver and strategies to enable all children to access problem solving, to work on a problem with resilience and to develop a greater depth of mathematical understanding.
