Introduction

These sessions will be a chance for teachers to try out practical ideas that will enhance confidence in the teaching of primary science. Good practice suggests that we should start with the learner and involve them in the learning, so they see that the science is relevant to them. We need to value their ideas. This is in essence part of the Primary Science Capital Teaching Approach. PSCTA. Through allowing children time to explore and modelling how to form testable questions to investigate we will be able to get personalised enquiry started within the classroom. This enquiry will use the skills of working scientifically (disciplinary knowledge) within that substantive context. Through practical activities we will explore these skills and knowledge and become confident at assessing the evidence through participating in a moderation activity.

Training Objectives

Through engagement with latest research, teachers will improve their practice and increase their understanding of the substantive and disciplinary elements of the primary science curriculum. This in turn will impact on the knowledge, skills and values their pupils will learn

Learning Outcomes

  • Have a bank of ideas to support getting enquiry started and appreciate the importance of the Primary Science Capital Teaching Approach.
  • Understand the importance of teaching the skills of enquiry to ensure pupil achievement
  • Moderating the ‘evidence’ children produce and considering next steps in learning.
