Problems of command
Join us for an exclusive after‑hours talk with Brigadier Rhoderick Jones, a former commanding officer of the Queen's Royal Irish Hussars.
We are delighted to welcome Brigadier Rhoderick Jones a former commanding officer of the Queen's Royal Irish Hussars. Drawing on decades of service and deep regimental knowledge, Brigadier Jones has authored In Peace and War: The Story of The Queen’s Royal Hussars (The Queen’s Own and Royal Irish) — a superbly researched insider’s history of the UK’s elite armoured regiment.
Brigadier Robin Rhoderick-Jones, will examine some of the problems of command faced by officers and soldiers of the Queen's Royal Hussars and its antecedent regiments during the last 350 years.
How do you deal with divided loyalties? What if you are a reigning monarch on the field of battle and your horse decides it wants nothing to do with it? When given an order that is most likely to lead to your death and that of your men, what do you do? As captain of your regimental polo team, you discover that your star player (Lieutenant Winston Churchill) has dislocated his shoulder, do you replace him? When, as a young officer, you are faced by a murderous horde of Indian mutineers how do you react? When all you officers are killed and battle rages what do you do?
On the battlefields of the Crimea, Europe, India, Afghanistan and much closer to home in peace and war, Rhoderick-Jones examines the myriad difficulties faced by commanders at all levels and discusses whether command decisions should be arrived at by an individual or whether corporate solutions have a part to play
