Process: Meanwhile Space

Metalwas founded in London in 2002 by Jude Kelly CBE, working with current Artistic Director and CEO, Colette Bailey since its inception. It has been active in Liverpool since 2004, in Southend-on-Sea since 2007 and in Peterborough since 2012. From these bases, Metal works to provide the catalyst that can transform the potential of people and places, exploring the impact of art and artists' practices on civic and civil society. Metal produces an exciting multidisciplinary programme of international and UK artists in residence and runs a wide range of events, exhibitions and participatory projects.In Liverpool, Metal work out of Edge Hill Station, the world’s oldest active passenger railway station. Metal completed a major renovation of the previously empty, historic buildings in 2009. The original 1836 Engine House, Boiler Room and Accumulator Tower now serve as a cultural and creative hub for artists, the neighbourhood and wider city region, carrying on the building’s proud history of innovation, aspiration and technology.

Meanwhile spaces are those unloved and vacant plots of land we see in all cities, that fall between the cracks of ownership and use. 
 
Metal's latest project sees us working with three artists and local residents to activate one of these 'meanwhile spaces.'
 
Selected by a panel of local residents, artists Marcus Coates, Cristina Lina and Neville Gabie will work together with community members this summer to rethink the potential of one of the neighbourhood’s targeted meanwhile spaces.

Artist biographies:
 
Marcus Coates:
Marcus Coates is a contemporary artist living in London. He is recognised for his performances and installations that employ shamanistic rituals and contrast natural and manmade making processes. In 2013 he was shortlisted for the Fourth plinth, Trafalgar Square artwork (2015/16).
Cristina Lina: 
Cristina Lina has a background in graffiti and mural painting and continues to work with this format as well as experimenting with quilt making (something she describes as ‘the opposite of spray-painting’) ceramics, performance, print and installation. Her work is explicitly fun, yet at the same time she hopes disarming, creating a certain chaos through the possibilities that emerge from the people involved.
Neville Gabie:
With a background in sculpture, Neville Gabie’s work has always been driven by a response to specific locations or situations caught in a moment of change. Highly urbanized or distantly remote, his work is a response to the vulnerability of place. Gabie’s interest is in establishing a working relationship within a particular community as a means of considering its physical, cultural or emotional geography.
