An extraordinary art exhibition that explores art and culture's efficacy in delivering Public Health. This encounter offers an affordable and accessible panacea for the lived experience of African and Caribbean Community members in the UK. These memorable images originate from Cornelius Toks Browne, a UK-based Artist. 'Adumaadan' the brand name given to his monochrome style is a Yoruba word meaning; "Black Man/Woman thrive and shine'.Trauma in Black Bodies is his final project for the Creating Healthy Communities Digital Badge Program of the University of Florida Centre for Arts in Medicine.The Artist, Cornelius Browne is a qualified teacher / high-functioning autism specialist / an artist with a specialism in using art as medicine/co-founder of the G.Y.M. (guard your mind) an effective psycho-education in mind and behaviour management. CLINICAL RATIONAL FOR 'TRAUMA IN BLACK BODIES'VICARIOUS RE-TRAUMATISATION“Traumatization may occur at a community level as well. In a population-based, quasi-experimental study, Bor et al., (2018) found that highly publicised police killings of unarmed Black people had spillover effects on the mental health of Black people in the region where the killing happened. The impact was felt for months afterwards, whereas no ill effects were found for White people in those same localities. It is thought that the cultural legacy of state-inflicted oppression is a contributing factor leading to poor community health through vicarious retraumatization” – Harvard PTSD Quarterly 2021Vicarious re-traumatisation occurs in more circumstances than we may care to acknowledge. 1. When a person of African Caribbean descent watches a periodic movie on slavery e.g. ‘12 Years a Slave’ by Steve MacQueen etc.2. In our numerous classrooms during History lessons that reference slavery and other aspects of the traumatic experiences of the African diaspora. Adequate support is however not provided for young people, adolescents and adults who find themselves in these psychologically challenging scenarios.In addition to the impactful life-changing images that will meet your gaze, mind management tools will be available in the therapeutic space to help fill the vacuum of these unmet needs.
