Professor Catherine Hayes' professorial lecture provides an insight into the responsibility and impact that transformative learning and teaching have on local, regional, national and global societies and considers how the roles of educators and disciplinarians is significant in this.Prof Hayes is a National Teaching Fellow and Principal of the Higher Education Academy. Here academic role at the University of Sunderland predominantly involves teaching on the institution's taught doctoral programmes and the supervision of doctoral students from a diverse array of professional disciplines. She also holds visiting Professorships in Higher Education at the Universities of Cumbria and Liverpool Hope.

She is a podiatrist by original profession and a Founding Fellow of the Faculty of Podiatric Medicine at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Glasgow, where she has served as Secretary to the Executive Board and a UK Advisor in Podiatric Medicine. She is also a Fellow of the College of Podiatry (London). As part of her contribution to research and pedagogic practice with students from Sub-Saharan Africa when she was Leader of the MSc Public Health programme, Prof Hayes was awarded Honorary Membership by Distinction of the Faculty of Public Health in 2015. Regularly working cross faculty into the Faculty of Creative Industries, she was also elected to the Royal Society of Arts in 2016. As the mother of three girls, Prof Hayes has been a keen advocate for Chartered Scientist status for the allied health professions, particularly women, who historically have been underrepresented in this group. She has achieved Fellowship of both the Chartered Management Institute and the Institute for Leadership and Management, alongside Chartered Manager status.
In relation to the Scholarship of Learning and Teaching and Health Research, Prof Hayes has published widely on qualitative research methodologies and the development of professional practice in the contexts of both health and Higher Education. She has an active interest in transcending disciplinarily between science and arts at an epistemological level and she is currently working on a monograph relating to this titled 'Beyond Disciplinarity; Reconnecting Ontologies, Epistemologies and Methodologies' with colleagues from the Faculty of Creative Industries and the Graduate Research School.
Prof Hayes' professorial lecture provides an insight into the responsibility and impact that transformative learning and teaching have on local, regional, national and global societies and considers how the roles of educators and disciplinarians is significant in this. Emphasis will be placed on the need for regular reflection on the responsibility learning and places upon educational institutions beyond the situation and context of micro level practice, to the generations of people whose lives can potentially be influenced through it. Being able to influence and shape global societies for a future we can neither accurately guarantee or predict is part of the power and privilege that transformative learning and teaching embodies and Prof Hayes hopes to capture this. The fundamental legacy of an education for life remains priceless in a neoliberalist economy where the commodification of education is now a daily reality of Higher Education. This lecture celebrates our individual and collective contributions to the constancy and agency that transformative education offers, in an uncertain world.

The professorial lecture will take place on Monday 18 November at 6pm at Prospect Building, room 009, St Peter’s Campus, Sunderland, SR6 0DD.
Refreshments will be served from 5.30pm in the Prospect Building.
