Project Tree Hugger

Project Tree Hugger

Overview

We've planted over 6000 trees on our farm over the last 2 years and we need your help to care for them and ensure they thrive.

PROJECT TREE HUGGER is a series of days, spread across the growing season, when we are asking people to come and spend a day - or whatever time they can spare - to help us care for the trees we have planted across our farm.

There aren't any government grants we can access to help pay for a contractor to come and maintain our trees, so mobilising our local community to help is vital!

As an organic farm we don't use chemicals to suppress weeds, so we depend on manual labour to help us care for these trees in the first few years of establishment.

At Great Cotmarsh Farm, we believe that trees have an important role to play in keeping our farm healthy.

  • They provide an abundance of diverse habitat for nature
  • They improve the health of our soils
  • They provide our livestock with shelter and shade
  • They are critical to help manage the flow of water across our farm and the surrounding communities

What will happen on the day?

You can book for the full day, the morning session, or the afternoon session - whatever fits in with your schedule. We would be really grateful if you could arrive to your session on time as you might turn up and find we've all left to go to the trees!

The morning session will start with a short presentation about our agroforestry scheme so you can understand why we think trees are important on our farm.

We will then go out onto the farm into different trees planting areas to undertake the maintenance taks. These will include:

  • Pulling grass and weeds out from inside the tree guards and around the base of the trees
  • Replacing or repairing tree guards that are broken or missing
  • Identifying which trees need replacing

These tasks are really important to help ensure our tree planting thrives here at the farm. We can promise you a day in the outdoors and fresh air, doing something really meaningful to support nature - as well as plenty of tea, coffee and homemade brownies.

We have plenty of parking and excellent toilet facilities.
