Psychoanalysis and Birth

The SITE for Contemporary Psychoanalysis is a training organisation and a member of theCouncil for Psychoanalysis and Jungian Analysis College (CPJA)of theUnited Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). All graduates are eligible for UKCP registration.The Site was established in October 1997 by psychotherapists who wished to create a training programme and an association that would foster critical, reflective and imaginative thinking about psychoanalysis and its contemporary practices.

This event is a round table conversation that is centred around Dr Ruth Kara-Ivanov Kaniel’s book on Birth in Kabbalah and Psychoanalysis. The round table discussion will be followed with the floor opening to the audience for Q&A, comments and discussion.The experience of birth has functioned through the ages as a vital metaphor foundational to all fields of art, philosophy, religion and literature. This book highlights the significance of birth in Jewish culture, as a challenge to existential philosophy and the centrality of death in Western culture. Similarities between Kabbalistic and midrashic perceptions of birth and its current place in cultural and psychoanalytic discourse are discussed. The Panellists Dr. Ruth Kara-Ivanov KanielDr. Ruth Kara-Ivanov Kaniel is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Haifa. She serves as Research Fellow at the Tel Aviv Institute for Contemporary Psychoanalysis and at the Shalom Hartman Institute. Her research deals with intersections between mysticism, gender, and psychoanalysis. She headed a Research Group on "Psychoanalysis and Kabbalah" at the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute. Her books: Holiness and Transgression: Mothers of the Messiah in the Jewish Myth (2017); The Feminine Messiah: King David in the Image of the Shekhina in Kabbalistic Literature (Brill 2021). Birth in Kabbalah and Psychoanalysis (De Gruyter 2022), winner of the Gorgias Press competition for Jewish Thought; Poetry: The World Has No Silence (2011); The Soul is Moved (Ritmus 2017)Rabbi Dr Tali Artman PartockRabbi Dr Tali Artman Partock teaches Judaism at the Faculty of Divinity at the University of Cambridge. She is the rabbi of Sukkat Shalom Synagogue, Wanstead, and a trainee at AGIP. Her research focuses on enslavement, prostitution and sexual violence and paths for recovery from it in Judaism and Christianity in Late Antiquity. Some of these are topic are discussed in her forthcoming book, ‘When is it Rape? Agency Personhood and Rabbinic Law,’ Routledge, 2023. Rabbi Dr Tali will speak of pre-life, after-life and the problem of separation.DrYael Pilowsky BankirerDr Yael Pilowsky Bankirer is a member of the Site for Contemporary Psychoanalysis. She is a Medical Doctor (Psychiatry) and has a Ph.D in Gender studies and psychoanalysis. She works in a private practice in Cambridge, UK. Dr Yael Pilowsky will talk about the maternal, the womb and the Bionian no-thing
