About this event

  • Event lasts 6 hours 30 minutes

Public Inquiries are an important tool to seek accountability for people and communities who have experienced injustice. However, they can be hard to achieve, and how effective are they as a route to justice?

Not1More and Leigh Day are convening a one-day conference bringing together campaigners, lawyers and policy experts from across a broad range of civil society in order to reflect on experiences of engaging with Public Inquiries, and to share visions and alternative strategies for communities to access justice.

Event Aims

  • Convene existing knowledge and facilitate networking for mutual support between groups and practitioners working on Public Inquiries.
  • Assess the effectiveness of Public Inquiries as a route to justice for grassroots communities and victims of injustice.
  • Hold workshops and discussions to develop resources which share practical advice for those wishing to pursue a Public Inquiry.
  • Vision future routes to justice based on the needs and capacities of grassroots communities.

Target Audience

  • Communities and activists who a) have been involved in a Public Inquiry b) have campaigned for - but not achieved - a Public Inquiry c) have a public inquiry as a goal and want to learn more d) have found state accountability mechanisms inaccessible and ineffective, and so are pursuing their own routes towards accountability.
  • Lawyers and legal practitioners who have engaged in Public Inquiries.
  • NGOs that have supported the use of Public Inquiries, and other mechanisms to pursue justice.

Programme

A mixture of presentations, panels and facilitated sessions, with activists, lawyers and community members speaking. Please see below for the summary agenda.
