Event description

Pump (verb) – to push, to drive

Kin (noun) – nearest and dearest, tribe, connections.

PUMPKIN to drive community connections.

We are gathering together the city's leading creative talent to use the pumpkin to build neighbourhood spirit at NOMA this Halloween - and that includes you!

Over 300 pumpkins will be pushed and pulled beyond recognition to help us to lay the foundations of a new society. We will explore food, music, drink, horticulture, architecture and fine art with this humble gourd as our guide.

Here's what you can expect to find behind the doors of the bewitching bank on Thursday 31st October:

12PM - EAT PUMPKINS with Joe Whitmore

Join pumpkin king and One Dish Room cook Joe Whitmore to enjoy a seasonal vegan dhal, utilising as many parts of the pumpkin as possible. Expect pickling, poaching, pulverised pumpkin and more.

1-3PM - SIX MONTHS LATER with Joe Hartley

Some say gardening is the art of patience, we say drying gourds is. This workshop represents just the beginning of a 6 month process to produce a dried gourd for making into what ever you like. Select an ornamental gourd from the group and make a string net to hang it up with. You'll take your gourd home and hang it in a dry place outside to petrify for next spring.

3-4PM - POWER CARVING with Jesse Cracknell

Rummage in Jesse's tool-box and choose your favourite tools to try your hand at power carving. Can you beat the carving world record of 16.47 seconds?

4-6PM - HAPPY HOLLOWEEN with Joe Hartley

It appears as though the country has not a single dried gourd left in it, so we're making clay bottle gourds instead. Select your bottle from the group and use clay tools to cut it into new brand new shapes. Each bottle has the potential to be cut into a neat little ceramic range - you work out how.

6-8PM - WRITE TO FRIGHT with Found Fiction

Create a horror story in two hours at this writing workshop with creative collective Found Fiction. Through writing prompts, discussions and exercises, they’ll take you through the art of plot, character and conflict development. You'll share the progression of your own horror tale throughout, eventually leaving with a skeleton of a story to take home afterwards.

Fancy dress encouraged.

Do I have to attend the full day?

We would love to see you for the full day!

However, we understand this isn't always possible, so pop in and out as you please.

Can I bring my family?

Everyone's welcome to join in but please keep children supervised at all times. Please note that there will be age restrictions placed on the power carving at 3pm but we will try and keep it as available as possible to all.

Can I bring my dog?

Well behaved dogs are welcome to attend but must remain on the lead at all times.

I have an allergy...can I eat your food?

We aim to make everything as allergen free as possible and items will be labeled as required. If you have any concerns, just ask the cook!

Is there parking?

There are plenty of pay and display options nearby but no on-street parking. We encourage you to use public transport - the Old Bank Residency is perfectly located between Manchester Victoria and Shudehill stations - or walk.

Will there not be lots of food waste?

Bring along some containers to take any leftover pumpkin pulp with you; combine this with the knowledge you'll take home from Joe Whitmore and One Dish Room and you've got plenty of pumpkin cooking ahead of you..!
