Online series of workshops for school pupils

Due to Covid-19 restrictions we realise it is harder to get to our Atelier to attend our pupil workshops therefore we have created a series of online workshops to engage with your pupils. These lessons can be taught by the Future Textiles team live in your classroom through zoom or using a similar software that you are able to use within your school.

These workshops are aimed at introducing new skills to the pupils and to support their learning within the classroom. The workshops are designed to be completed with limited resources and to be taught in an interactive way.

Our 3 introductory LIVE online workshops are:

• Learn how to knit

• Create a drawstring bag

• Fashion and sustainability – presentation

Once you book a date we will get in touch with yourself to organise the correct time of the session. These workshops can be minimalised to fit into a single period or we can extend it by adding in techniques if you have a longer period with the group up to 2/3hours.

We would require one short video meeting prior to the workshop to make sure that the connection and set up works without any technical glitches and to confirm everything ahead of the workshop.

Materials required:

Household object to replicate knitting needles such as chop sticks or a pencil.

Household object to replicate yarn/wool: Such as parcel string or cut up an old t-shirt into a continuous strip.

Drawstring bag – The use of the product is very versatile and can be created in a variety of sizes. This could be used for a craft bag (A4), a sustainable gift bag (A5-A3) and gym bag (A3)

Materials required:

We suggest using paper sizes as your pattern piece- A5/A4/A3 depending on what size you wish to create. You would be required to have 2 pieces of fabric the same size.

If your department is short on fabric, then up-cycling is great for this project – you could use any cotton based fabrics such as bedding or as shirt. You could also use items such as denim jeans.

A sewing machine is required for the pupils.

They will also need cord or ribbon for the top to drawstring the back closed. You can either use one or 2 cords depending if you wish to have the bag as a backpack or as a bag. Shoe laces would work depending on the size of the bag.

Fashion and Sustainability- Presentation on the negative impact that the fashion industry makes on the environment and how we can make steps to make change and become more sustainable.

o Discuss- what is sustainability?

o Look at the impact of the fashion industry and fast fashion

o Advise on small steps that can be made to become more sustainable

o Inspiration – look at simple ways to create impact

Materials: This workshop requires no materials – this is a presentation to share an introduction around this topic.
