Python for Researchers

Python for Researchers is developed and delivered by Dr. Rob Treharne. Rob has extensive experience teaching practical coding skills to cohorts of postgraduate and undergraduate students from a very wide range of disciplines (although his research background is in Physics). He is the founder of HiPy - a grass roots, community driven coding initiative that, to date, has delivered over 120 events to more than 2000 students and researchers from across 30 disciplines.

<h2>A full day workshop for postgraduate students and researchers.</h2><p>Want to unlock your research potential and supercharge your productivity using Python? </p><p>This workshop - with its problem driven, &#x27;learn-by-doing&#x27; approach and a focus on authentic, &#x27;real research&#x27; scenarios - will provide you with a powerful toolkit that will help you to become a an efficient, innovative and successful researcher.</p><h3>During this workshop you will:</h3><ul><li>Engage in a well structured, dynamically taught online course for Python that will focus on the manipulation, analysis and visualisation of data.</li><li>Have access to  a highly experienced coding teacher who will support you directly throughout your learning experience.</li><li>Interact collaboratively with other researchers.</li><li>Develop and showcase your own research  themes and ideas.</li><li>Build a professional network of peers from other institutions.</li></ul><p></p><h3>After this workshop you will be able to:</h3><ul><li><p>Read, write and manipulate your own large datasets with ease using Python.</p></li><li><p>Create high quality graphs and figures for your publications/thesis.</p></li><li><p>Build tools to automate your data analysis and to save you precious time.</p></li><li><p>Scrape data from the web.</p></li></ul><p></p><h3><strong>Course Outline:</strong></h3><p><strong>    1. Install and Setup: </strong>Installing Python. What is an IDE? How do I run a Python script? Python Fundamentals. Jupyter notebooks.</p><p>    <strong>2. Handling Data:</strong> Reading data. Writing Data. Dealing with multiple files. Introduction to Pandas.</p><p>    <strong>3. Visualisation:</strong> Introduction to Matplotlib. Scatterplots, boxplots and histograms. Subplots, insets and trendlines. Creading paper and thesis quality figures.</p><p>    <strong>4. Advanced Pandas:</strong> Filtering and formatting. Merging and concatenating. Getting data from the web.</p><p>    <strong>5. Putting it all together:</strong> Life expectancy Vs. GDP (WHO example). Doing cool stuff with YOUR data.</p><p>   <strong> 6. Pro Tools for Research:</strong> Git and GitHub. Plotly (interactive graphs). PyCharm. Python for Latex.</p><p></p><h3>About the Teacher:</h3><p><strong>Dr. Rob Treharne</strong> is a Lecturer in the School of Life Sciences, University of Liverpool. He has a Masters degree in physics from the University of Warwick and a PhD in photovoltaics from the University of Durham. Rob  has introduced thousands of undergraduate and postgraduate students to coding via his grass roots, community led coding initiative HiPy. He is an expert at online teaching and specialises in creating events that are dynamic, engaging and highly valued by learners. In 2019 he was awarded a Learning &amp; Teaching fellowship for the delivery of his HiPy coding workshops at the University of Liverpool.</p>
