Python Programming: Intermediate - Birmingham City University

CAS Regional Centre: As a CAS Regional Centre (CRC), Birmingham City University fully supports the promotion and teaching of Computer Science (CS) in Schools.  We recognise the need for these skills, not only in our future undergraduates, but across all disciplines and at all levels. Today’s children will be working in a world of technology that will be invented by tomorrow's Computer Scientists.  
We have a team of educational professionals with a wealth of experience in delivering support to Schools and Colleges for Computing and Computer Science. This experience has given us a great deal of insight and knowledge in how to provide education, support teachers and promote academic programs.  Teachers need sound subject knowledge, good practical skills in delivering and managing hands on activities, a set of resources that they can pick up and use, and last but certainly not least, a support network they can rely on to offer help and advice as needed.
Birmingham City University has engaged in: training CS Master Teachers (MT); run a CAS hub; won a DfE funded project to develop and deliver CS resources; delivered CPD sessions; run school enrichment activities and;  hosted STEM and CS events at the University.

<TD>The course is aimed at those who have attended the Introduction To Python programming course, or who know the basic constructs of the language. It builds on the basic looking at lists, recursion, file I/O, and introduces a Windows and Logo environment. The main focus is on further developing the candidates to take a real world problem and contextualize this into an algorithm and translate this code. </TD>

  PROGRAMME (STC)
This course will position programming in the new national curricula, and address:
1) functions - mutable and immutable types - and recursion
2) file I/O for persistent storage
3) the Logo and Windows modules
4) algorithmic approaches for designing code
5) further functions, and making code maintainable and easy to read.
There will be a series of challenges to work through and for which to develop solutions.
Worksheets will be available to use in the classroom, with a staged approach to the tasks. Full solutions will be available.

Duncan Maidens MIET CEng
Duncan is a senior lecturer at Birmingham City University specializing in Computer Networking and Digital Communications. With a career in industry and academia, Duncan has always led the way making technology easy to understand. With the experience of running a Lead Cisco Academy for the past fifteen years, and with STEM and CAS roles, Duncan has a wealth of experience in teaching teachers.
