Ilyas Khan, CEO and founder of Cambridge Quantum Computing

For years, scientists have been exploring a new kind of computing that harnesses the unique properties of the quantum world to extraordinary effect. These machines promise to outperform even the most powerful supercomputers, transforming everything from drug discovery to machine learning and cybersecurity.

In this talk, Ilyas Khan reveals how quantum computing is emerging as a reality with investors and large corporations entering the ring. He’ll review the rapid progress being made by a range of companies including Google, IBM and Microsoft and ask whether it’s time to believe the hype.

About the speakers:

Ilyas Khan is the CEO and founder of Cambridge Quantum Computing. Before then, he was the founding chairman of The Stephen Hawking Foundation. He is a fellow of St Edmund’s College at the University of Cambridge, and also the Leader in Residence at the Judge Business School where he was instrumental in the establishment of the highly regarded Accelerate Cambridge programme of investment in early stage Cambridge-based technology sector companies.

Ilyas is a regular and extensive writer and commentator on topics relating to quantum computing. He has a long-standing interest in the foundations of mathematics and category theory. He is a life member of the American Mathematical Society.

The event is hosted by Valerie Jamieson, New Scientist Events' creative director.
